Alaska's Bearclaw Lodge sits on the shores of Lake Aleknagik, which is in the renown Bristol Bay area, 350 miles southwest of Anchorage. We are also located near the southern boundary of the Wood-Tikehik State Park, the largest state park in the nation at 1.6 million acres. A series of five interconnected lakes, formed by glaciers, begins at Lake Aleknagik and runs north, offering hundreds of miles of spectacular scenery, wildlife and fishing. This area is also the spawning grounds of the world's largest population of sockeye salmon and the world's most productive salmon fishery. This thriving ecosystem supports a diverse population of wild life including brown bear, moose, carbou, eagles, waterfowl and other migratory birds.
The Fishing
The Bristol Bay region is home to all five species of Pacific Salmon (King, Sockeye, Pink, Chum, and Silver) as well as Rainbow trout, Artic char, Dolly Varden, Grayling and Pike. The king salmon, ranging up to 50 lbs., return to the Nushagak River drainage with runs typically eceeding 100,000 fish, making it the top river int he entire state of Alaska for king salmon. Over 1.5 million sockeye salmon swim past Alaska's Bearclaw Lodge each summer, arguably the best sockeye fishing in Alaska. Three of the state's top-rated trophy rainbow trout river systems lie in our backyard. Wherever you find salmon spawning, you will find rainbow trout.
